First time using an eSIM for Japan - do I install it at home or when I land?

I'm flying to Tokyo next month and just bought a Japan data plan. This is my first time using an eSIM, so I'm nervous about messing it up. Should I install it at home before I leave, and if I do, will it start eating my data right away? I'd rather not burn through the plan before I even take off.

Install the eSIM at home while you still have reliable Wi-Fi, then leave it turned off or as a secondary line that isn't your default data line. It only activates and starts counting when it connects to a network in Japan, so installing early is completely safe.
