First time using an eSIM for Japan - when exactly should I install and activate it?

I'm travelling to Tokyo next month for two weeks and just bought a Japan data plan for the first time. My phone supports eSIM, but I'm nervous about messing up the installation timing. Should I install it at home before I fly, or wait until I land at Narita? And will it activate automatically when I arrive, or do I need to do something manually?
