First time using an eSIM for Japan, will it activate automatically when I land?

I've never used an eSIM before and I'm heading to Tokyo next month for two weeks. If I install the plan before I fly, will it just start working when I land, or do I need to do something manual on arrival? Also, does it interfere with my regular SIM for calls and texts?
