How do I keep WhatsApp active on my home number while using a Vietnam eSIM?

I'm heading to Vietnam for two weeks and plan to use a travel eSIM for data. I want to keep my home number active so I can receive WhatsApp messages and calls on that number. How does that work if my home SIM is in the phone alongside the eSIM? Do I need to keep my home line turned on, and will I get charged roaming fees?

WhatsApp is tied to your account and phone number, not your SIM card, so you can keep using your home number for WhatsApp even if you're on a Vietnam eSIM for data. Just make sure your home SIM is inserted and active for incoming messages or calls, but turn off data roaming on that line to avoid charges. Your eSIM will handle all mobile data.

I did exactly this last month. I kept my home SIM in the phone with data roaming off and used the eSIM for data. WhatsApp worked fine on my home number, and I could still receive SMS for two-factor codes. Just don't answer regular calls on your home line unless you're okay with roaming charges.

One tip: in your phone settings, set the eSIM as the default for mobile data, and set your home SIM as the default for calls and SMS if you need to receive codes. That way WhatsApp uses the eSIM's data but stays linked to your home number. Also, you can turn off 'SIM PIN' on your home line to avoid issues after restart.

I just put my phone in airplane mode and then turned on Wi-Fi and the eSIM data. WhatsApp still worked on my home number because it uses the data connection. But if you want to receive SMS, you'll need to turn off airplane mode and have your home SIM active. It's a trade-off.

I kept my home SIM on but disabled data roaming and set the eSIM as the data line. WhatsApp messages and calls came through fine. I did get a few spam calls on my home number, so I set my phone to silence unknown callers. No extra charges as long as data roaming was off.

If you have an iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular and make sure your eSIM is selected for Cellular Data, and your home line is selected for Default Voice Line. Then turn off 'Data Roaming' for your home line. That's it. WhatsApp will keep working on your home number.

Also, be aware that if you remove your home SIM entirely, WhatsApp will still work as long as you have data, but you won't be able to receive SMS or calls to that number. To keep WhatsApp fully active on your home number, leave the SIM in the phone and just avoid using it for data. Our eSIM plans include data only, so you won't have a local number, but that doesn't affect WhatsApp.

I've done this in Vietnam multiple times. The key is to turn off data roaming on your home SIM and set the eSIM as the data source. WhatsApp works perfectly. You might want to disable voicemail on your home line to avoid accidental charges if someone leaves a message.
