No internet after installing eSIM in Italy — what should I check first?

I installed my GotoeSIM eSIM before flying to Rome and it shows as active, but I still have no internet after landing. I've tried turning airplane mode on and off a few times. Do I need to change any specific settings for Italy, like APN or data roaming?

First, make sure mobile data is switched to the GotoeSIM line and that data roaming is ON for that line, since the eSIM roams on local Italian networks. Then check that the eSIM is set as your default data line and restart the phone once after landing.

Same thing happened to me in Florence — my phone was still defaulting to my home SIM for data. Switching the data line to the eSIM and enabling roaming fixed it within a minute.

For me it was the APN: I had to manually set it to the one listed in the install instructions, then toggle airplane mode. After that, LTE popped up straight away.

If you're on iPhone, also check Settings > Cellular > your eSIM > Network Selection and set it to Automatic. Mine was stuck on a network that didn't have a roaming agreement.

If data still doesn't work, go to your eSIM's settings and confirm the APN field is filled in exactly as shown in the app's setup guide, with username and password left blank. Also try manually selecting a network like TIM or Vodafone in Network Selection, then reboot.

Mine only started working after I removed my physical SIM temporarily. Not ideal, but it forced the phone to use the eSIM and confirmed the plan was fine.

Don't forget to check that you haven't hit a data cap or that the plan actually started — mine activated on landing but took about 10 minutes to register. Give it a little time before panicking.

In Italy, some phones need 'Data roaming' enabled even though you're not leaving the country, because the eSIM is technically roaming. That was my issue in Milan.
